Groupfiles: Mapping your Department Share to a Drive
Overview
Ths guide goes over how to map a department share to a drive on the users device
Note: this can only be done on campus
Details
Basic Instructions
You can connect to the Groupfiles share at the root level, which will show you every share that exists and give you access to the _IN and _OUT box in each share or you can connect directly to the department share(s) that you use regularly. This process is simple from either Windows or OSX:
Windows 10
Open Computer.
In the menu bar click Map Network Drive
The Map Network Drive window should appear.
In Drive choose any available letter after H.
In Folder type\\groupfiles.willamette.edu\nameofdeptshare (where 'nameofdeptsshare' is the path to the specific department share EX. \\groupfiles.willamette.edu\wits)
If you desire: click the Reconnect at Login box, this will automatically re-connect your home drive when you log in to your computer while on campus.
Click Finish.
You may be prompted for a username and password
In User name type username (where 'username' is your Willamette login name)
In Password type your Willamette network password
Click OK
After a few seconds, the contents of your home directory will be displayed in a new window.
Removing a drive-letter assignment
Double-click on My Computer (Windows 10: click on Start, then choose My Computer).
Right-click on the drive you want to remove, and from the pop-out menu, choose Disconnect.
Troubleshooting Suggestions
Some personal firewall software and other similar security utilities have been known to interfere with the ability to map network drives. If you have such software installed and are having problems accessing network drives, try disabling the software
Mac OSX
For all versions of OSX (through 10.8 'Mountain Lion')
From the top menu bar click Click Go -> Connect to Server
In the Connect to Server window, in the Address box, enter:
smb://groupfiles.willamette.edu/nameofdeptshare (where 'nameofdeptsshare' is the path to the specific department share EX. \\groupfiles.willamette.edu\wits)
(where 'username' is your Willamette login name)
Hint: you can click the '+' icon on the right to add this share to your Favorite Servers to save typing time in the future.
Click Connect.
A log in window will appear.
Name: enter your Willamette username
Password: enter your Willamette password.
Click Connect.
A folder with the contents of your NetFiles directory should now appear in a Finder window.
If you close the Finder window, you can get back to it from the Finder menu.
Open File>New Finder Window
On the left side bar look in the Shared area
To disconnect from NetFiles:
click the Eject button to the right of the file name in the Shared section of a finder window left side bar
if the NetFiles listing is displayed in a finder window, click the Disconnect button in the file listings pane
Mapping an individual department share
To map a direct path to the department shares you use the most (i.e. for your primary department or a work group you belong to), follow the basic drive mapping instructions in the appropriate link above and enter this text to specify the drive you want to connect to:
\\groupfiles.willamette.edu\’departmentsharename’ (e.g. ‘wits’ or ‘Rhetoric’)
You will be immediately dropped in to the specific department share and see a listing of all the folder and files that you have access to.
Mapping the whole \dept share
If you connect to the root level of Groupfiles, you can see a listing of all the department shares visible to you and share files with other departments using the _In and _Out folders. To map a path to the whole listing of departmental shares, follow the basic drive mapping instructions in the appropriate link above and enter this text to specify the drive name:
\\groupfiles.willamette.edu\dept
This can be a useful view for a few reasons:
You can browse to any of the shares that you are a member of without needing to map each one to a different drive letter.
You access to every department’s _IN and _OUT folders (*See the description of _IN _OUT Folders here)
**During the transition this will give you a definitive list of the shares that have been moved to Groupfiles (instead of living on \\home)
You can locate the full path name of the department share so you can map it directly if you choose to.
