Groupfiles: Mapping your Workspace drives
Overview
this is a guide on how to map a workspace drive on a users device
Note: this can only be done on campus
Details
Basic Instructions
You can connect to the Groupfiles share at the root level, which will show you every share that exists and give you access to the _IN and _OUT box in each share or you can connect directly to the department share(s) that you use regularly. This process is simple from either Windows or OSX:
Windows 10
Mac OSX
For all versions of OSX (through 10.15 'Catalina')
From the top menu bar click Click Go > Connect to Server
In the Connect to Server window, in the Address box, enter:
smb://groupfiles.willamette.edu/workspace/nameofshare (where 'nameofshare' is the path to the specific department share EX. smb://groupfiles.willamette.edu/workspace/mtl)
(where 'username' is your Willamette login name)
Hint: you can click the '+' icon on the right to add this share to your Favorite Servers to save typing time in the future.
Click Connect.
A log in window will appear.
Name: enter your Willamette username
Password: enter your Willamette password.
Click Connect.
A folder with the contents of your workspace directory should now appear in a Finder window.
If you close the Finder window, you can get back to it from the Finder menu.
Open File > New Finder Window
On the left side bar look in the Shared area
To disconnect from NetFiles:
click the Eject button to the right of the file name in the Shared section of a finder window left side bar
if the NetFiles listing is displayed in a finder window, click the Disconnect button in the file listings pane
Mapping the whole \workspace share
If you connect to the top level of the workspace area, you can see a listing of all the workspace shares visible to you. To map a path to the whole listing of workspace shares, follow the basic drive mapping instructions appropriate for your device above and enter this text to specify the drive name:
\\groupfiles.willamette.edu\workspace
This can be a useful view for a few reasons:
You can browse to any of the shares that you are a member of without needing to map each one to a different drive letter.
You can locate the full path name of the department share so you can map it directly if you choose to.
Mapping an individual workspace share
To map a direct path to the workspace shares you use the most, follow the basic drive mapping instructions appropriate for your device above and enter this text to specify the drive you want to connect to:
\\groupfiles.willamette.edu\workspace\’workspacesname’ (e.g. ‘rhet121’ or ‘anthoimages’)
You will be immediately dropped in to the specific workspace share and see a listing of all the folder and files that you have access to.
