Overview

Hold for Authentication is an error unique to macOS users. This error is caused by having the incorrect username or password associated with printing.

Updating Your Password

There are two ways you can update your password. This guide will go over the “quick” method and also discuss updating the saved password on your computer.

From the Printer Queue:

Find the job that reads “Hold for Authentication”. Click the refresh icon with a padlock in the center of it.

You should see a popup with your incorrect username in it. Type in your Willamette username (excluding @willamette.edu) and your Willamette password (this will be 16+ characters long).

Updating Your Saved Keychain Password:

If you are unable to fix the “Hold for Authentication” error by refreshing the print job, you will need to find the entry in your Keychain and delete or modify it.

  1. Open Keychain Access (use your Spotlight Search on Mac). Launch Keychain Access.

  2. If prompted to open Passwords, select “Open Keychain Access”.

  3. Select “Login” on the left menu.

  4. Find printer you tried to print to, with should have a blue @ symbol as the icon.

  5. Right Click and select “Get Info”

  6. In the popup window select “Show password:”.

  7. Update your account / password and click “Save Changes
