Classroom Types

Classroom Types

Overview

University classrooms can all be categorized as one or more of the classroom types described below.  A classroom's type affects which AV system designations are compatible.

Classroom Types

Seminar

A seminar classroom features roundtable or conference-style seating, allowing all present to face each other, fostering discussion and interaction.  In most cases, seminar rooms accommodate 16 people or fewer, including the instructor(s).

Lecture

Lecture classroom and lecture halls are laid out with rows of seating facing an instructor's position at the front of the room.  Lecture classrooms generally accommodate more students than seminar classrooms, labs, and studios, but are less useful for methods of instruction other than lecture.

Lab

There is no specific seating layout that indicates a classroom is a lab.  Instead, a lab classroom can be identified by the presence of equipment - computer, scientific, or otherwise - at each seat or team workstation.
